Evan first joined the firm in May of 2011 as a law clerk. He spent the majority of that summer in Las Cruces, New Mexico assisting Partner Peter Schoenburg in his successful death penalty defense in the trial of United States v. Lujan. Evan later joined the firm as an Associate after graduating cum laude from the University of New Mexico School of Law, where he received the Excellence in Criminal Law Award. During law school Evan focused extensively on learning criminal and constitutional law. Evan had the opportunity of working with many of the State’s finest attorneys on: Fourth Amendment issues; felony criminal defense trials; post-conviction relief; expungement matters; and civil rights litigation. Evan plans to practice in these areas and grow his skills under the mentoring and leadership of the firm’s fine practitioners. Prior to pursuing a career in law, Evan worked for several years as a broadcast journalist at National Public Radio affiliate station KRWG-FM in Las Cruces. During that time several of Evan’s stories aired nationally on NPR. The New Mexico Associated Press Broadcasters recognized Evan’s work with numerous awards in the categories of: General News; Documentary; and Continuing News Coverage. In December of 2007, Evan was honored with the First Amendment Award from the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico, for his investigative legal coverage of religious discrimination against New Mexico State University football players who practiced Islam. Evan is also a very proud graduate of his hometown school, Michigan State University, in East Lansing, Michigan. When he is not practicing law Evan enjoys playing and writing music, and fly fishing.
