Carolyn M. “Cammie” Nichols

Cammie Nichols, of Rothstein, Donatelli, Hughes, Dahlstrom, Schoenburg & Bienvenu, LLP, has been practicing in the courtrooms of New Mexico since being admitted to the bar in October of 1993. Beginning her career as a "street lawyer," she immediately focused on representation of people accused of crimes, enjoying trial work and gravitating towards clients with a critical need for a voice. As she developed her practice, she began to represent clients who had been subjected to abuse at the hands of police during the course of their arrest and prosecution. This evolved into a practice focusing on both criminal defense and civil rights litigation.
She eventually joined forces with another attorney, Shannon Kennedy, forming a partnership which lasted for several years. Ultimately, she joined the firm she works with now, and she enjoys a practice focused on the same type of trial work she has done for over the past decade and a half. To this day, working with people in great need of advocacy adds meaning to her career. Recently, in a case involving police officers frustrated with sleeping snow plow drivers, she and Bob Rothstein obtained a $3.75 million dollar verdict for a family who lost a husband and father in a truck rollover on an icy bridge, a bridge which should have been made safe. Unfortunately, that verdict could not be fully realized due to the limitations placed on judgments against the state. That is a battle for another day. At least the family was left with the comfort that the jury understood the egregious failure of the defendants, understood that the family's loved one did nothing wrong, and understood the devastation of the family's loss.
Growing up in Albuquerque, Ms. Nichols went through the Albuquerque public schools, graduating from Valley High School in 1986. She then enrolled as a Presidential Scholar at the University of New Mexico, earning her Bachelor's of Arts, summa cum laude, in 1990. From there, she went to Yale Law School, earning her Juris Doctorate in the spring of 1993. In 2003, she was named the Regional "Warrior of the Year" by the Trial Lawyer's College. She has been active in organizations involving criminal and civil litigation since the inception of her practice. For many years, she has made presentations at various seminars involving jury selection, examination of witnesses, and other trial advocacy issues. Since 2008, she has served as an adjunct professor at the UNM School of Law, involved in the teaching of Evidence and Trial Practice. Since 1985, she has enjoyed sharing her life with her husband, Loren, and now with their two children, Max and Theo. They continually remind her about what is important in life, and lovingly include her in their many adventures. She brings this full life experience with her to the courtroom and the classroom. |
