MARK DONATELLI: SMU AT FEDERAL PRISON IN THOMSON, ILLINOIS, IS ON ITS WAY TO BECOMING A HOMICIDE FACTORY

Posted by Donna M. Connolly | Jun 01, 2022

Partner Mark Donatelli was interviewed as part of an investigation by NPR and the The Marshall Project into a federal prison  located in Thomson, Illinois, that is one of the country's most violent and dangerous prisons. The prison has been the location of the federal Bureau of Prisons (“BOP”) special management unit (“SMU”), since the BOP closed the SMU located at Lewisburg, PA. A previous investigation by NPR and The Marshall Project, in 2016, revealed high rates of violence there. Mark observed that Lewisburg was “a homicide factory,” not just a “violence factory,” and warned that the conditions that caused the violence at Lewisburg are the same – or worse – at Thomson, concluding that Thomson is likely another violence or homicide factory being run by the BOP.
